The New York State Society of CPAs’ (NYSSCPA) Rochester Chapter will hold its World of Accounting (WOA) event on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Five Star Bank Plaza at 100 Chestnut St., in downtown Rochester.

This one-day event gives New York high school students the opportunity to learn about the many careers in accounting, and this year, students will attend panel discussions and speak to college students as well as public accounting professionals, including members of the IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division.

The WOA program highlights the career experiences of professionals in public, corporate and governmental accounting roles at every level, and includes college students majoring in accounting, professionals working as entry-level staff accountants, CFOs, firm partners and even FBI special agents.

It also aligns with the NYSSCPA’s Moynihan Scholarship Fund, which provides two very distinct opportunities for high school and college students through 1) the Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP) program and 2) the Excellence in Accounting Scholarships program.

The president of the NYSSCPA’s Moynihan Scholarship Fund Board of Trustees, Scott M. Adair, CPA, who is also a Rochester Chapter member of the Society, will speak with students during the event about the accounting profession, as well as about the possibilities that The Moynihan Scholarship Fund can provide.

“I will have an opportunity to speak to these students not only about the profession, but [about] the opportunities that the Moynihan Fund has for these students,” said Adair.

He then added, “The COAP program is a three- to five-day college readiness program to increase racial diversity within our profession, while providing students with a close-up look at the opportunities within our profession. Our scholarship program, known as the Excellence in Accounting Scholarships, provides annual financial assistance to eligible college students with declared accounting majors enrolled in a New York state college or university, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.”

In 2019–2020, The Moynihan Scholarship Fund’s Excellence in Accounting Scholarships issued $165,000 in various amounts, ranging from $500 up to $10,000. Since WOA’s launch in 2003, more than 2,000 students have attended. This year, the event will reach more than 169 high school students in the area.

“As president of The Moynihan Scholarship Fund Board—which was named after our past NYSSCPA president, David J. Moynihan—it is truly my honor to be providing these opportunities to our young people all while furthering the desire of Moynihan, who was a champion of providing educational opportunities to young adults, whether in high school, college or just beginning their professional careers,” said Adair.
